Car Accidents at Work

There are millions of people who drive or ride in a motor vehicle as part of their jobs. While some types of jobs are more dangerous than others, the risk of being involved in an on-the-job motor vehicle crash is there for anyone who drives for work.

According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), motor vehicle crashes are one of the leading causes of work-related deaths and injuries. From 2003-2014, 22,000 people were killed in car related accidents at work.

If you or a loved one was involved in a car accident while on the clock, contact one of our skilled Houston workplace accident lawyers today at The Krist Law Firm, P.C. at (281) 283-8500.

On-the-Job Motor Vehicle Crash Statistics

Transportation incidents are one of the most common types of on-the-job accidents. Transportation incidents can include any of the following types of accidents:

Roadway accidents accounted for 26 percent of all fatal work injuries in 2015, which is up 9 percent from the prior year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). On average, motor vehicle crashes kill more than 2,100 while they are at work and injure another 353,000 every year.

According to the Texas Division of Workers’ Compensation, transportation incidents are the leading cause of work-related injuries and accounted for 45 percent of all work-related fatalities in 2015. Of the total number of on-the-job transportation incidents in 2015, 179 were roadway crashes and 28 involved pedestrian-vehicular accidents.

At Risk Workers

Truck drivers are by far the most-at-risk for being injured in a work-related roadway accident. In fact, one out of every six workers killed on the job in the United States is a truck driver and 65 percent those deaths result from motor vehicle crashes.

To put it into perspective nearly half of the 1,264 on-the-job motor vehicle fatalities in 2015 involved a semi, tractor-trailer, or tanker truck. According to the CDC, the industry sectors with the highest rates of work-related motor vehicle crashes include:

  • Trucking
  • Logging
  • Fuel dealers
  • Petroleum products
  • Agriculture production
  • Waste management service
  • Taxi service
  • Farm supplies
  • Oil and gas extraction
  • Bus service
  • Coal mining
