U.S. Highway 290 is located within the entire state of Texas and passes through Fredricksburg, Johnson City, Austin, and Houston. It is a very hazardous highway because of the lack of shoulders, tight lanes, frequent wet road conditions, potholes, constant closures, and high-speed limit of 65 mph. Unfortunately, there have been a substantial number of U.S. Highway 290 accidents that have injured or taken the lives of many individuals in recent years.

Recent U.S. Highway 290 Accidents
The accidents that occurred on U.S. Highway 290 have had a devastating effect on Texas residents and their families. Most recently, a motorcyclist died after smashing into a dump truck hauling beer on 290 near Hegar Road. Several months prior, a man driving a seafood truck westbound on 290 lost his life when he veered into the eastbound lane and crashed into a tanker head-on.
There was another recent incident that involved two brothers who lost their lives in a three-car crash on 290 and Retha Drive, right in front of Dripping Springs High School. The driver of a Toyota did not yield to the right of way and turned left onto the highway, causing the Toyota to crash into the Civic with the brothers. A Cadillac Escalade added to the severity of the accident by crashing into the Civic and causing it to spin and skid into the westbound lanes.
There were also two tragic Mother’s Day accidents that took place on 290. Five people lost their lives after a two-car crash on U.S. Highway 290 and Crow Ranch Road. Another crash took place on the highway, only minutes after the first one and killed two.
Preventing U.S. Highway 290 Accidents
In order to prevent U.S. Highway 290 accidents and the tragic deaths and injuries that occur as a result, people need to leave their homes earlier when they have to travel to a certain destination. This will enable them to have more patience and drive with caution. On days with adverse rain or other dangerous weather conditions, drivers must be extra cautious. In addition, seatbelts should be worn at all times, speeding should be avoided, and distractions should be minimized.
Redevelopment of U.S. Highway 290
Fortunately, a project to redevelop 290 began in 2011 and is on track to be completed in 2018. This U.S. Highway 290 project will widen the highway, reduce the risk of 290 accidents, and make a positive difference in the lives of thousands of commuters who are often stressed when going to and from work. The development of a parallel Hempstead Tollway from Loop 610 to Grand Parkway is in talks as well but will unlikely be constructed for 20 years.
