New iOS 11 App to Make Driving Safer

According to the National Safety Council, there are over 1.6 million car accidents per year due to the use of cell phones while behind the wheel. In fact, one in four accidents is the direct result of texting and driving.

Apple is releasing a new, free iOS update that will help make driving safer. There are several new features in the update that will attempt to ensure that drivers do not text and drive.

If you have been injured in a car accident due to someone else texting while driving, contact a Houston personal injury lawyer at The Krist Law Firm, P.C. right away. Our team of skilled attorneys will evaluate your case and help you file your claim.

iOS 11 Update Features

iOS 11 offers several new features to help drivers not look at their phones while they are driving. The largest one is the “Do Not Disturb While Driving” option. Through this feature, text messages will not come through to your screen. If someone texts you, they will receive a notification that you are driving. You can customize the automatic text message response that gets sent to those trying to reach you through the settings section of your phone.

However, if it is urgent, the person attempting to reach you can type “urgent,” and the text will appear on your phone. Phone calls will come through only on the car’s Bluetooth.

There are several different ways to turn on the “Do Not Disturb While Driving” feature such as:

  • Using Bluetooth: The feature allows all calls to come through over your car’s Bluetooth. In addition, Apple’s CarPlay can be used to turn on music and use the Maps app. When you are using the Maps application, you will be told which lane to drive in, along with the current speed limit.
  • Automatically: You can adjust the settings on your phone to turn on this feature while your car is in motion. Once you start driving, the ‘’Do Not Disturb While Driving” feature will automatically turn on and began to work.
  • Manually: Each time you get in the car, you can manually turn on the “Do Not Disturb While Driving” feature. Since the feature is motion activated, it will not be able to distinguish from when you are in the passenger seat or are the driver yourself. In instances like these, turning on the feature manually is a good idea.

In addition to the “Do Not Disturb While Driving” feature, Siri’s voice has also been improved. She is now featured as a starry blurb floating in the middle of the screen.
