Most Dangerous Intersections for Pedestrians

Inherently, pedestrians are at more risk on the roads than drivers. Pedestrian accidents frequently occur where walkers are forced to venture into the road. For example, crosswalks and intersections are spots where the likelihood of colliding with a pedestrian increases.

If you are a pedestrian, a car accident can seriously injure you. Your mobility may be restricted so badly that you are unable to work. This can be a serious obstacle; expensive medical bills and vehicle repairs are all the more stressful with no income.

If you find yourself in a situation where a negligent driver struck you, while you were on foot, discuss your situation with a Houston pedestrian accident lawyer. At The Krist Law Firm, P.C., our attorneys have the experience to assess your case and determine what you may be entitled to. Every situation is unique; schedule a free consultation online or by calling (281) 283-8500 today.

Houston Intersections Are Notoriously Dangerous for Pedestrians

Houston has long faced issues with dangerous drivers. There is a documented lack of law enforcement in the city, as well as a well-known problem concerning intoxicated drivers. On average, seven pedestrians or cyclists are hit per day in the greater Houston area.

Between 2013 and 2017, there were nearly 8,700 traffic incidents in Houston that involved a pedestrian. Authorities say that factors such as wider corners play a part in making intersections dangerous for walkers and bike riders. The wider corners allow cars to turn faster than usual, allowing them less time to stop for people crossing the street.

One of the Most Dangerous Intersections in Houston

Houston city officials have been collaborating with the Federal Highway Administration to determine which intersections are among the most dangerous in the area. The study focuses specifically on increasing safety for pedestrians and bikers. Near the top of the list is the intersection of Bellaire and South Gessner. Through 2017, seven accidents occurred at that intersection involving pedestrians or cyclists. One of those accidents resulted in a fatality.

Other Dangerous Houston Intersections

Bellaire and South Gessner is not the only intersection identified as being particularly dangerous to pedestrians. Officials theorize that certain neighborhood factors contribute to more pedestrian accidents happening in certain intersections than others. For example, 17 percent of the families near Bellaire and South Gessner don’t have cars. This naturally leads to a higher level of foot traffic. More foot traffic, in turn, leads to a higher potential for pedestrian accidents. Other factors are more citywide; Houston was designed when there were fewer people and fewer cars. The increase in population and drivers make roads more congested. This increases the odds of a collision and the likelihood of a frustration-induced driver error. Among the Houston intersections named as the most dangerous for pedestrians are:

  • Fannin and Pierce;
  • Bellaire and Ranchester;
  • Westheimer and South Dairy Ashford;
  • Longpoint and Gessner;
  • Westpark Drive and US 59;
  • Old Spanish Trail and 288;
  • Fondren and West Bellfort;
  • Bissonnet and Wilcrest; and
  • West and Airline.

State and federal officials continue to pursue ways to make Houston intersections safer for everyone.
