Brian Meersma, a junior at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, has been named the 2016 winner of The Krist Law Firm, P.C. National Scholarship. The $10,000 scholarship will enable him to focus on his studies while he advocates for people with disabilities.
Meersma has overcome challenges in his educational journey and has worked to help others who face similar trials. As a young boy, Meersma was diagnosed with dyslexia, a condition that causes difficulty learning to read and interpret words, letters, and other symbols. When his grandfather read to him, he realized that he was able to better understand and even enjoy books. Since then, Meersma has used innovative technology to overcome the challenge.
Meersma has a passion for helping other people with disabilities as well, including showing them how to use ebooks with text-to-speech functions and enlarged font publications. Meersma has worked with disability advocacy groups, spoken at conferences, and worked with legislators to develop laws that benefit those with dyslexia and other disabilities.
The Krist Law Firm, P.C. shares Meersma’s passion for working with people who have experienced challenges and disabilities. We frequently encounter individuals who have been injured in car accidents, trucking collisions, oil and gas incidents, and other personal injury situations who are now facing disabilities as a result. We work to help those individuals recover compensation that will allow them to obtain medical care and technological assistance to move forward with their lives.
Scott Krist, the firm’s lead trial attorney, started The Krist Law Firm, P.C. National Scholarship in 2015 to help students obtain an education despite the rising costs of college. Meersma says the $10,000 scholarship will allow him to focus on his studies in Cornell University’s Industrial & Labor Relations Program with a focus on disability advocacy in the workplace.
