Houston Light Sport Aviation Crash

In February of 2016, an experienced pilot and flight instructor with Houston Light Sport Aviation was tragically killed when his two-seater plane crashed shortly after take off. He was training a student at the Houston Southwest Airport when the accident occurred. According to official reports, the single-engine light sport plane got caught in a strong crosswind, and the pilot was unable to maneuver a safe landing. As a result, the plane took a nosedive and crashed into two stationary aircrafts. Luckily, the flight student was able to survive the flaming wreckage, despite suffering critical injuries.

Top Causes of Aviation Accidents

While the Federal Aviation Administration is still investigating the exact cause of the Houston Light Sport Aviation crash, there are usually a variety of factors involved in aviation accidents. The following contributing causes can apply to both private plane crashes and commercial airline accidents:

  • Pilot Error — Because the pilot is primarily in charge of navigating a flight, even the smallest human error can lead to a serious crash. Pilots are also often responsible for maintaining fuel levels and mechanics for their privately owned planes or helicopters. The pilot can be deemed negligent for an accident when he fails to follow standard aviation protocols, or take the proper steps to ensure in-flight safety.
  • Mechanical Defect — Faulty aviation mechanics and engineering can create major problems during the course of a flight. Issues may involve defective components, design flaws, or poorly installed equipment. In many cases, the plane’s crew is unaware of any defects until it is too late. When mechanical problems occur in mid-air, the pilot will usually be forced to make a risky emergency landing.
  • Negligent maintenance — Aviation industry standards require all planes to undergo regular maintenance. However, routine checks may be delayed or overlooked when operators fall behind on deadlines. Some aviation companies also employ multiple contractors to conduct maintenance, which can result in miscommunication and incomplete work orders.

When you encounter an aviation accident, the aftermath can be devastating for you and your family. Compared to other types of vehicles, aircrafts carry a much higher risk of fatality and serious injury during crashes. Depending on the nature of your accident, you may be able to hold the plane’s manufacturer or pilot responsible for damages. An experienced Houston aviation lawyer can help you investigate potential product defects, pilot error, or areas of negligence, and establish liability to file a personal injury claim.
